Shown on the left is a typical example of a derelict run down row of terraced housing in central Middlesbrough; a total eyesore suffering from continuing urban decay.

Middlesbrough council propose to demolish these houses and build new ones in their place (as shown in the bottom left picture) In my opinion, this is a poor solution to the problem, not only are the new houses a similar size and design, but they don’t appear to be much of an improvement to the previous.
If this redevelopment was to go ahead the old houses would need to be demolished, thousands of tonnes of waste disposed of and thousands of tonnes of new building materials sourced just rebuild similar homes. In essence, it seems this is just an expensive way of replacing one problem with another.

The images below demonstrate how I would propose to renovate the existing slum and bring it into the environmentally friendly suture. A much more practical, cost effective and most of all environmentally friendly solution do you not think...!

The construction industry is already responsible for 90 million tonnes of demolition per year, this attitude is certainly not the best way to reduce this appalling figure.
