Posters and digital bill boards showing how our town/homes/lives could be if we don't make a change rapidly.
Websites/blogs to allow instant access from anywhere in the world at anytime
Banners and sign writing on pubic transport to make us stand and think about our consequences.
Carbon footprints in the concrete paths with facts and statistical/analytical figures embedded in them.
Little slogans on public stairwells, which would serve as a reminder of how catastrophic our immediate and minor habits are.
Information in locations where people are likely to look at it. (bus stops, cinema screen trailers, airports, train stations etc.)
Tree boards for passerby's.
Giant (overly sized) plastic bottles and other packaging where ingredients are replaced with the whole manufacturing, distribution and packaging and refusal processes and the profound effect it has on our planet.
Introduce aesthetics and the concept of green to our local streets,(perhaps trees, shrubbery or small alotments.)
Start one street off with greenery and aesthetically pleasing amendments and encourage them to lead by example with good environmental practice.
Overall I believe it will take a good role model to set the wheels in motion and carry this concept forward.
Although a very serous topic, humour often helps to get people involved. Perhaps because it is something they can relate to in their everyday lives. Advertisements and similar methods of promotion work very effectively (see ACT ON CO2 TV campaign). Its relatable as we can all apply it to ourselves in someway or another with the father complaining about the high energy bills etc.
TV is a very powerful communication source. If sustainability was incorporated into popular programmes such as, coronation street or big brother, people would begin to follow suit and effectively become the norm. There is a believe that many people disregard making the first step to being sustainable out of fear of being mocked by others. If it becomes the latest trend like a fashion niche such as, the Nike air max training shoe, it would become a worldwide phenomena today as it was in the 1990's. People would actually be causing riot of over who got them first.
This is an image I put together using Photoshop to demonstrate how companies such as Nike could do their bit to push us all forward. If all of a sudden one day this was cool then sustainability would soon follow.
I personally believe the key to pushing this idea forward is to make 'sustainability' and good environmental practice fashionable in order to get more people on board.
By introducing a celebrity or someone in the public eye to lead by example, such as Leonardo Di'caprio in is writers debut "The 11th Hour" as he looks at the state of the global environment and revolutionising solutions to our degraded planet.
Angelina Jolie UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Since early 2001. I put this image together on PhotoShop to demonstrate a message which can be put out there to set an example to the rest of us. If Angelina Jolie was to plant a tree that would be headline news, as it would if Victoria Beckham ate a burger. So lets use the media positively and follow their actions to a better life for all.
